The first Vernaccia vines were anciently planted on the lands of Sinis peninsula wide open on an auricular gulf where the vine finds even today a propitious soil and takes the gust of mediterranean winds. One of these, the Mistral seems to be a main component of that peculiar bitterish taste which characterizes this wine. Like a dampened echo of a sea taste wrenched from the soul of the waves and imprisoned by the wind which, with its salty blows, passes it on to the bunches of grapes from which the Vernaccia will drip. Another important element is that the propitious environment for the ripening of the Vernaccia grapes is the Oristano area. We know that nature itself often creates remedies against the troubles she generates; the Vernacccia with its peculiar characteristics, was born in this windy region full of ponds and marshes and extremely malarian, to offer a protection to the inhabitants of this land. Then it is likely to be very ancient, probably known by the first inhabitants of this valley, the Phoenician Punic ones, the Romans, the Byzantines. Nowadans, the Vernaccia has a festive role. It�s the nectar to drink the health of our country. We could say that if wines of Sardinia remind the spirit of Sardinians for the versatility of their characteristics, yet they show a more faithful attachment to their native land, coming to maturity and reaching perfection without artful adulteration. Respecting these traditions the Cantina Josto Puddu situated in San Vero Milis, ten kilometers north of Oristano, devotes itself to the production of this ancient and excellent wine, since 1962; the activity began by purchasing small lots of Vernaccia grapes from local vine-growers, that were pressed and vinificated following the traditions of the Oristano district. The product obtained was then transferred into small oak or chestnut casks for the period of ageing required. Meeting with success, the small cellar was transferred to the actual location and enlarged. Owing to the diversifying of the demand the Cantina Josto Puddu has introduced, besides the Vernaccia, which adorns itself with the D.O.C. �Vernaccia di Oristano� since 1971, other wines such as red white, rosé and sparkling wines in order to satisfy a wider range of consumers. In 1962 Primo Pacenti, a lover of the land with a knowledge of its products, founded Azienda Agricola Canalicchio di Sopra. Situated in the northern side of the Municipality of Montalcino and in the middle of the tourist itinerary of Val d�Orcia, the farm extends for about 60 ha, 15 of which are cultivated with vines and 2 with olive groves. Three generations live here side by side with the common aim of producing quality wines: the generation of the grandfather, Primo Pacenti, who founded the farm and managed it until the 1990�s, as well as participating actively in the social life of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino; that of the father, Pier Luigi Ripaccioli, who with the grandfather has undertaken to increase the quality by proposing careful and meticulous work; that of the grandchildren, Simonetta, Marco and Francesco who joined the management in 2001, bringing with them new ideas and new technologies always in respect of ancient methods and customs. The vines grow in two of the zones with the highest vine growing and wine making vocations in Montalcino: Canalicchio di Sopra and Le Gode di Montosoli. The different exposure and the geological differences of the soils produce different Sangiovese grapes where balance and power compensate one another in the wine cellar through the patient work which always seeks the best blend of tradition and innovation.

We remember that moment as if it were today, our decision was made and we knew very well what we would encounter. We wanted to devote our lives to our job in the family vineyard, trying to carry on that amazing work and commitment started by the two generetions before ours, by our grandfather Giuseppe Petrussa and after him by our father Celestino. Our decision left our parents speechless. It was not difficult to understand the reason why. Such a decision brought back to their mind the hard life spent in the fields, the constant deprivation, due to economic difficulties. They were not happy at all and they could not undestand our choice to give up secure work places and guaranteed salaries. Our determination had deep roots, based on the values of the millenial farming culture, that our parents handed down to us through their world view. To give up a salaried position in another field has never been a problem for us. We were aware that the freedom of living and working according to the rythms of nature would have payed us back.
